What if one of your clients is bringing you in to speak to their entire department of 108 people, and wants to buy a copy for everyone in attendance? Should that count as 108 individual copies, or as one bulk purchase? What if an online book club wants to purchase 50 copies of your book-one for everyone in the group? Should those count as 50 individual copies, or as one bulk purchase? If you decide to order 10,000 copies of your own book, that shouldn’t automatically put you on the NYT bestseller list.

Toy Industry was new, unregulated, and devoid of institutionalized antisemitism (official or unofficial policies that restricted or prevented Jews from being admitted to college, hired in businesses, and government, for example) unlike some older and more traditional industries. Jewish Designers, Entrepreneurs, and Inventors in the US Toy Industry.īefore and during the World Wars, the U.S. The Toy Association, the current incarnation of that earlier trade group, remains a large organization and a driving force in the industry to this day, running the American International Toy Fair in Manhattan annually. The Toy Manufacturers of America’s number one item on its founding list of goals was to have the federal government enact tariffs to raise the prices of imported toys to protect sales of products by U.S. It stood at the center of a small controversy when some Washington senators were discovered playing a head-to-head tournament with the game in a cloakroom instead of spending their time in legislative session.īy 1916 there were enough toy and game manufacturers in the US for 80 of them to band together to form a trade association, one of the first of its kind. Crandall’s ball and maze puzzle or “dexterity game” Pigs in Clover went on to take the nation by storm. Barnum of circus fame to carry his line in Barnum’s museum for several weeks in 1871 and earned enough to focus on toys full-time. Crandall was best known in the early part of his career for lithographed blocks of all kinds. Crandall of Pennsylvania began making toys in his father’s woodworking and furniture factory at the age of 12, taking it over at only 16 when his father died. The Strong, Rochester, New York.Ĭharles M. Pigs in Clover, Waverly Toys, USA, about 1900. Many other firms followed in their footsteps, especially in New England. Their first manufactured toy was a horse-drawn fire engine. Like many other early toy companies, they would import or create and then sell a variety of tin goods until, over time, toys became their main product. toy manufacturing company in the industrial era was Francis, Field & Francis, also known as the Philadelphia Tin Toy Manufactory, founded in 1838. As the industrial revolution took hold of the toy industry, this would change. These might have been made by family members or others in your local community, or you might have made them yourself. If you weren’t so fortunate, the few toys and games you most likely had were “folk toys.” These would be things like peg-based solitaire and other puzzles, checkers sets, tops, guns, corn husk or hand-sewn dolls, and hobby horses. Before the early 1800s, if you were a child of wealthy parents, you likely had toys purchased from overseas for you or perhaps purchased in one of the new-fangled “department stores” in a major city. toy industry, for obvious reasons, doesn’t have hundreds of years of history extending before the industrial revolution that Europe experienced. Detailed evidence from NASA s Hubble Space Telescope, however, shows a black hole in a new light: fostering, rather than suppressing, star formation. We’re just still connecting the dots between them. Black holes are often described as the monsters of the universetearing apart stars, consuming anything that comes too close, and holding light captive. Nightingale said: 'Most of the biggest black holes we know about are in an active state, where matter pulled in close to the black hole heats up and releases energy in the form of light, X-rays and other radiation. Astronomers expect to see some black holes in this middle phase, on their way to becoming supermassive but not quite there yet - and, so far, they mostly don’t.īoth tiny and enormous black holes do exist. It opens the door to discovering far more black holes than previously thought - and shedding fresh light on how they grew so large. Second, there’s very little direct evidence of so-called intermediate-mass black holes - the ones in between star-sized and galaxy-sized. Because no light can get out, people can't see black holes. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. Keck Observatory on Maunakea, Hawaii have spotted a strange streak of baby stars and shocked gas measuring 200,000 light-years long. A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light can not get out. So astronomers also think the universe might have jumpstarted the process by creating giant primordial black holes in the moment just after the Big Bang – though this is just as weird and problematic as you might think. Astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and W. Two twists, actually.įirst, it would take longer than the universe’s current age for black holes that started as dead stars to grow to galaxy-center-sized black holes. "Finding and characterising the first galaxies that illuminated the early universe at cosmic dawn is pivotal to understand the physical conditions and the processes that led to the formation of the first stars.Eventually, by growing and consuming material - planets, stars, errant spaceships, other black holes - astronomers think they evolve into the supermassive black holes that they detect at the centers of most major galaxies.īut there’s a twist. It states: "Galaxies forming at these times may be the seeds of the much more massive and mature galaxies in the local universe. Visualizing the geometry of familiar three-dimensional space. The quartet of galaxies will give astronomers an idea as to what the universe looked like shortly after the Big Bang, it is claimed in a new report. How, in one sense, space and time switch their roles inside a black hole and why this. An invisible monster supermassive black hole is feared to be skulking around intergalactic space. The space experts spotted the ancient constellations using the state of the art James Webb Space Telescope. It comes as astronomers claim to have discovered four of the oldest galaxies in the known universe, said to have been created just 300 million years after the Big Bang. The most distant black hole ever detected is located in a galaxy about 13.1 billion light-years from Earth. Researchers believe the gas is probably being shocked and heated from the motion of the black hole hitting the gas. The black hole lies at one end of the column, which stretches back to its parent galaxy. Over to the right of the screen, you can quickly access film emulations by decade we suspect that this will be the default destination of most users once the novelty of the Time Machine descriptions fades. Many of the descriptions are skewed towards documentary photography, however, and key historical events from the relevant decade such as the moon landings – we’re not sure how useful this will be to a landscape or macro photographer, for instance. The descriptions of photographic approaches and styles from a particular era are genuinely interesting, and can be a useful creative spur – aestheticism and symbolism from the 1920s, for example. Time Machine, while an innovative feature, is something of a mixed bag in use. In addition, the new version brings the full range of Fujifilm film emulations to non-Fujifilm X camera owners, and also offers more ‘cinematic’/colour graded looks for customers after the look of LUTs. So, you can add the look of Tri-X black & white film from the 1960s, for example, while finding out more about famous photographers from that era, and indeed, the history of the film itself. Essentially, this adds a timeline down the left-hand side of the screen, organised by decades. In FilmPack 6, DxO has not only added more film stocks, but also introduced a novel feature called Time Machine. So being able to get the film look from a single, easy-to-use package still appeals. Why should they fork out for an Ektar or Tri-X impersonation when they are shooting with the real thing and getting the negs digitised? While the film revival shows no sign of petering out, the majority of modern photographers are still shooting digitally.īrompton Oratory gets the Jean-Michel Basquiat look – note the Time Machine descriptions over to the left, which you can toggle on and off What’s more, LUT (Look up Table) packages are increasingly popular too, luring photographers who are eager to get more of a ‘cinematic’ look.Īnd let’s not forget the growing number of photographers who are discovering or rediscovering film, cutting out the emulation middlemen altogether. This is not just coming from other software firms, such as Mastin Labs, VSCO and all the other preset suppliers out there, but also from camera makers – particularly Fujifilm, whose cameras have long had quality film emulations built-in. The latest version, FilmPack 6, needs to deliver more than just a bunch of new film emulations and filters, however, as DxO now has a lot of competition. Its other image-editing packages attract positive attention too, particularly for the DeepPRIME noise-reduction features in PureRaw.ĭxO FilmPack has been around for a while, and as its name suggests, provides digital emulations of a lot of classic film emulsions. DxO has done an impressive job with the Nik Collection since taking it over from Google, turning a neglected image-editing suite into a powerful package that manages to rival Adobe while integrating seamlessly with Photoshop and Lightroom.Maybe it is a learning curve, but I hardly use it, while I automatically reach for the Nik tools almost all the time. The complete Perfect Suite was on sale recently for $95 so I picked it up. PE8 is part of a larger Perfect Suite that has a lot of nice capabilities I don't have it, just Perfect Effects 8. Not too long ago they were giving away the Pefect Effects 8 module I'm not sure if they still are, but you might check the web site. It is in your price range and has some really nice features. Just to make your decision a little harder, you should also look at OnOne Software's Perfect Effects. I also have some of the Topaz modules and their Clarity is pretty good, but there isn't the all-around capability of Nik. I also have and like the Nik Collection you really can't go wrong with it. You may also wish to check out the Topaz Labs offerings. I think I am going to go with the Nik collection. |
